Advice from Sophie on how to detox your wardrobe

Whether it’s a clutter-free closet, an overhaul of your outfits or just an annual arrangement of your fashions, it’s time for a major wardrobe clean and the Kpish team has worked with blogger Sophie Alexandra to help us on this process with 3 questions that you should ask yourself before starting.

When was the last time you wore it?

Whenever I clear out my wardrobe I have to ask myself this question because I can really hoard my clothes. I have things from 10 years ago I'm reluctant to throw out because they hold sentimental value or I'm just waiting for them to come back into style. But the truth is, even if they do, they may just not be you anymore, and that's ok. It's time to let go of those pieces even if they were once your favourite thing. If you haven't worn it within the last year, donate it to charity and share the love.

You know that piece of clothing you used to love but now matches just nothing else in your wardrobe or style in general? Time to say goodbye. For me that's my hot pink dress with cutouts that amongst other things is now just 2 sizes too small (and I don't know how I am kidding myself that I'll ever fit in it again, I can't put down the chocolate). It's just not my style anymore, I look at it with love but have no idea how to wear it or what to do with it. So I think I may have to just face facts: it's time to move on.

Is it a mis-matched piece?

Is it a mis-matched piece?

So you know a few years ago when shoulder pads kind of maybe came back and you rushed out to buy that blazer that kind of definitely made you look boss even though it never felt quite right on? It's easy to fall into the trend trap and buy something that is so not you and then after feel forced to wear it with everything. But the important thing is you have to feel comfortable, and you have to feel like you. Not every trend will work on everyone. So it's ok to give away that blazer that you think you should have liked but somehow never did, we've all been there. Just think of all the room you'll make for those pieces that give you genuine joy as you put them on. Those are the pieces that deserve your closet space.
